장성락
Born 1985
The Korean artist known as DUBU who drew Solo Leveling, widely regarded as the high point of webtoon action illustration. He died in 2022. The name reduces to 6 — the care.
6Filed under 6. The Care takes an obligation, and this entry is protects one.
Jang Sung-rak worked under the name DUBU at the studio Redice. He drew the Solo Leveling webtoon from 2018 until the main series concluded in 2021. He died in July 2022 at the age of 37, of complications from a cerebral haemorrhage; his colleagues and readers connected it publicly to the workload the format demands.
Colour composition at scale. The shadow army sequences in the later half of Solo Leveling are the work he is remembered for — enormous compositions in restricted palettes that stay readable while filling a phone screen with hundreds of figures.
Vertical-scroll staging. He was one of the artists who established how to time a reveal in a scrolling format, using long empty stretches where a print comic would use a page turn. Much of the visual grammar that later webtoon action follows is traceable to this series.
Rendering density. The lighting and material detail are closer to concept art than to comics illustration, and were produced at a weekly cadence.
Webtoon production requires full colour, full rendering, and weekly delivery, typically from small studios. Jang's death prompted an unusually public discussion in the Korean industry about that pace. Any account of the work is incomplete without it.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 42 across 2 words, reducing to 6. The weight sits in “Sung-rak”, which carries 28 on its own and reduces to 1.
Six is nurturer & harmonizer — care, community, and the weight of duty. The reference files it as an obligation. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 6's pull toward responsibility, care, and the people involved.
Heart's Desire 5, Personality 1: change underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Born is 1985, a 5 — none of which lands on the 6 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 6 smothers. The same instinct that protects a readership produces the paternalism several of these entries document. What the 6 still asks is that you name the people this was answerable to. The other entries that reduce to 6 are collected on The Care.
