Solo Leveling is a Korean webtoon, not a manga. It adapts Chugong's web novel and was drawn by Jang Sung-rak, who worked under the name DUBU. It ran on KakaoPage and Piccoma from 2018 to 2021. Gates to monster-filled dungeons have opened worldwide, and awakened humans called hunters clear them for money. Sung Jinwoo is ranked at the bottom until a dungeon nearly kills him and a system only he can see offers him quests.
It is included in this reference because it is one of the works most responsible for pushing Korean webtoons into the same conversation as manga for English-language readers, and because the format difference is instructive. Webtoons are drawn for vertical scrolling on a phone: full colour, one image column, pacing controlled by how far you scroll rather than by page turns. A reveal is timed by empty space, not by a page break.
The art is the draw. Jang Sung-rak's rendering is dense and cinematic, and the shadow army sequences in the later half are genuinely spectacular pieces of colour composition. He died in 2022 at 37; the work is widely regarded as the high-water mark for the medium's action illustration.
