kakifly
3The Telling · 30かきふらい
The creator of K-On!, the four-panel club comedy that defined a genre.
3Three — expression. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.
Career
kakifly is the pen name of the artist who created K-On!, which began in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara in 2007.
The work
K-On! ran from 2007 to 2010, followed by two short continuations until 2012. Its anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation made it a cultural phenomenon.
The style
kakifly's four-panel strips are relaxed and gentle, with jokes drawn from the characters' personalities and from small everyday events.
Why kakifly matters
K-On! set the pattern for many later club comedies and is one of the best-known examples of the Kirara style.
The name by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 30 across 1 word, reducing to 3.
Three is creative communicator — communication, creativity, and the public stage. The reference files it as an act of telling. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling.
Heart's Desire 1, Personality 2: initiative underneath, cooperation on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. What the 3 still asks is that you watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
