The illustrator whose Witch Hat Atelier brought the detail of European book illustration into manga. The name reduces to 1 — the opening.
1Filed under 1. The Opening takes a first move, and this entry is declares one.
Kamome Shirahama worked as an illustrator before her manga became widely known, and drew variant covers for American comics publishers, including work on titles from Marvel and DC. Her first manga collection, Eniale & Dewiela, was serialised in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Sirius and collected in 2015.
Witch Hat Atelier, serialised in Monthly Morning Two since 2016, made her reputation. It imagines magic as a drawn craft, learned by apprentices with pens and ink, and follows a girl who stumbles into that secret.
Her pages draw on European engraving and storybook illustration, with dense hatching, ornamented frames and elaborate costume design. Her fantasy world also pays unusual attention to how magic is used in daily life, as a set of tools as much as a source of wonder.
Witch Hat Atelier won the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material in the Asia category in 2020, and is frequently named among the most beautiful manga currently running.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 64 across 2 words, reducing to 1. The weight sits in “Shirahama”, which carries 42 on its own and reduces to 6.
What the 1 brings is initiative. The reference files it as a first move. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 1's appetite for a clean, decisive beginning.
Heart's Desire 6, Personality 4: responsibility underneath, foundation on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
人格 core is 25, a 7 and 総格 total is 30, a 3 — none of which lands on the 1 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 1 asks you to notice what had to not exist for this to be possible. The 1 mistakes being first for being right. Several of these texts describe launches that mattered enormously for a year and then mattered to nobody. The other entries that reduce to 1 are collected on The Opening.
