Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier has run in Kodansha's Monthly Morning Two since 2016. Coco, a tailor's daughter, has always believed that witches are born. When she watches the witch Qifrey cast a spell, she learns that magic is made by drawing glyphs with special ink, and that anyone could do it. Her first attempt goes badly wrong, and she becomes Qifrey's apprentice.
The series' central idea is that magic is a skill, learned like drawing, with rules, materials and practice. Spells are built from shapes, and Coco's progress is shown through the logic of the glyphs. For a manga drawn with such attention, the metaphor is pointed: the magic is literally made with ink and a pen.
Shirahama came to manga from illustration, including covers for American comics, and the pages draw on European book illustration and engraving as much as on manga convention. Dense, finely hatched panels sit beside wide open spreads, and the costume and architecture are consistently inventive.
It is one of the most admired fantasy manga in English translation and won the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material in the Asia category in 2020. It is a strong recommendation for readers who think manga art has a single look.
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 72 — 9 once reduced. The weight sits in “Atelier”, which carries 34 on its own and reduces to 7.
The reference files it as a completion. The number's contribution is endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles — and with it the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 3 (expression) against a Personality of 6 (responsibility) in the consonants — expression underneath, responsibility on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer holds. 総画 strokes is 35, an 8 and debut year is 2016, a 9, and debut year reduces to the same 9. Two systems, one figure.
Read on the 9's terms, this entry asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
