Career
Kazuo Koike was born in Akita Prefecture in 1936. He worked at Takao Saito's studio, writing scripts for Golgo 13, before becoming a writer in his own right.
The work
His best-known work is Lone Wolf and Cub (1970–1976), drawn by Goseki Kojima. He also wrote Lady Snowblood, drawn by Kazuo Kamimura, about a woman raised to take revenge, and Crying Freeman, drawn by Ryōichi Ikegami, about an assassin who weeps after every killing.
The teacher
In 1977 he founded a school of manga writing, the Gekiga Sonjuku, which taught many later professionals, including Rumiko Takahashi. He emphasised character above everything: a story, he taught, grows from a memorable character.
Why he matters
He was one of the most influential writers of gekiga, and his work shaped samurai and crime stories in Japan and abroad. He died in 2019.
