Kōta Hirano

4The Structure · 49

平野 耕太

Born 1973

The creator of Hellsing and Drifters, known for extravagant violence, heavy blacks and grand villains.

4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.

Career

Kōta Hirano was born in Tokyo in 1973. He began in adult manga and doujinshi before Hellsing started in Young King OURs in 1997.

The work

After Hellsing (1997–2008), he began Drifters in 2009, in which warriors from history, including Japanese samurai, are transported to a fantasy world at war.

The style

Hirano draws with heavy shadows and sharp, grinning faces, and loves speeches, poses and battle on a vast scale. His tone mixes horror and comedy, and he delights in characters who are larger than life.

Why he matters

Hellsing made him a cult figure in seinen action, and his style is instantly recognisable.

The name by its numbers

人格 core21 → 3総格 total30 → 3born1973 → 2

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 49 across 2 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “Hirano”, which carries 38 on its own and reduces to 11.

What the 4 brings is foundation. The reference files it as a structure. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.

Heart's Desire 5, Personality 8: change underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 21, a 3, 総格 total is 30, a 3 and born is 1973, a 2. The title says 4; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.

The 4 asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
