Leiji Matsumoto was born in 1938 in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, the son of an army pilot. He debuted as a teenager and spent years drawing shojo and other manga before his science fiction found its audience in the 1970s.
His central works share a universe: Space Pirate Captain Harlock, about a pirate who defies a decadent Earth government, Galaxy Express 999, about a boy's journey on a space train, and Queen Millennia. He was also central to the design of the anime Space Battleship Yamato (1974), which helped launch the anime boom.
Matsumoto's worlds are melancholy and romantic: lonely heroes, beautiful and remote women, mechanical detail drawn with obsessive care, and a vision of space as a vast sea. His themes are mortality, freedom and staying true to oneself.
His influence runs through anime and beyond; he collaborated with the French duo Daft Punk on the animated film Interstella 5555 (2003). He died in 2023.
