Career
Mari Yamazaki was born in Tokyo in 1967. At seventeen she went to Florence to study oil painting and art history, and she has since lived in Italy, Syria, Portugal and the United States. She began publishing manga in the 1990s.
The work
Thermae Romae (2008–2013) made her famous. She has also written and drawn manga about ancient Rome and the Renaissance, including a biography of Steve Jobs and, with Tori Miki, Pliny, about the Roman naturalist.
The style
Yamazaki combines careful historical research and detailed drawing of architecture with comedy. Her work is full of comparisons between cultures, drawn from her own life between Japan and Europe.
Why she matters
Thermae Romae won the Manga Taishō in 2010 and showed how a manga could make ancient history funny and fascinating. She is also a well-known essayist and commentator in Japan.
