林田 球
The creator of Dorohedoro, whose grimy, crowded, joyful pages are among the most distinctive in contemporary manga. Filed under 3, the telling.
3The letters of this name total 48, a 3 — the number of communication, creativity, and the public stage.
Q Hayashida trained in art before turning to manga. Dorohedoro, her first long series, began in Shogakukan's alternative magazine IKKI in 2000 and ran for eighteen years across three magazines.
Her art is dense, textured and deliberately dirty, full of grime, scrawled backgrounds and odd designs: masked sorcerers, mushroom monsters, devils and lizard-headed men. She draws much of it by hand with an attention to surface that makes the Hole, her setting, feel lived in.
Hayashida mixes extreme violence with domestic warmth and broad comedy, and she is known for giving every faction, villains included, friendships, hobbies and favourite foods. The result is a world in which nobody is quite a monster.
After Dorohedoro ended in 2018 she began Dai Dark, a space horror-comedy in the same spirit, and the 2020 anime adaptation of Dorohedoro introduced her work to a wide international audience.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the name totals 48. Reduced, that is 3. The weight sits in “Hayashida”, which carries 40 on its own and reduces to 4.
The 3 governs communication, creativity, and the public stage. The reference files it as an act of telling. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 3 sit two smaller figures: 3 in the vowels, 9 in the consonants. The presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of expression.
Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 16, a 7 and 総格 total is 24, a 6. The title says 3; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The Telling asks one thing of everything on it: watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
