ドロヘドロ
A man with a lizard's head and no memory hunts the sorcerer who cursed him, in a filthy, funny, violent city with a world of magic next door. Read from the closing, as a 9.

9Nine — reckoning. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.
Q Hayashida's Dorohedoro began in Shogakukan's IKKI in 2000 and, after that magazine closed, continued in Hibana and finally Monthly Shōnen Sunday, ending in 2018 with 23 volumes. In a grimy city called the Hole, sorcerers from another world use the inhabitants for practice. Caiman, whose head was turned into a lizard's, eats sorcerers' heads to find the one who cursed him, helped by his friend Nikaido.
The series is extremely violent and also warm and very funny. Characters on opposing sides are given cheerful home lives, love gyoza and argue about trivial things between massacres. Even the villains, a family of sorcerers led by the mob-boss En, are oddly likeable.
Hayashida's pages are dense with texture, grime and scrawled detail, and her masked sorcerers, mushrooms and devils are among the most distinctive designs in manga. The art is as much a reason to read it as the story.
It is a cult classic of alternative seinen manga, and its 2020 anime adaptation by MAPPA brought it to a much wider international audience.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 63, which folds down to 9.
Nine is humanitarian & sage — endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles. The reference files it as a completion. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
The vowels alone reduce to 11, the consonants to 7. Vision underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 15, a 6, volumes is 23, a 5, years serialised is 19, a 1 and debut year is 2000, a 2 — none of which lands on the 9 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. What the 9 still asks is that you work out what survived the ending. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
