8Title sums to 80 and reduces to 8 — The Ledger, where the reference files a reckoning.
What it is
Hiroaki Samura's Blade of the Immortal ran in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon from 1993 to 2012 and was collected in 30 volumes. Manji is a rōnin who has killed a hundred men, among them his sister's husband. A mysterious old nun puts sacred bloodworms into his body, and now any wound he takes heals: severed limbs reattach and he cannot die. To lift the curse, he vows to kill a thousand evil men.
How it works
Rin Asano, a girl whose father was murdered and mother taken by a group of swordsmen called the Ittō-ryū, hires Manji as her bodyguard for revenge. Their journey through Edo-period Japan brings them into conflict with the Ittō-ryū, led by the charismatic Anotsu Kagehisa, who wants to destroy the old schools of swordsmanship, and with the government forces who hunt them all.
The art
Samura's art is one of the series' great strengths. He alternates between rough pencil sketches, detailed ink drawing and sudden explosions of motion, and his fights are fast, chaotic and bloody. His characters wear a mix of period clothing and anachronistic style, giving the world a punk edge.
Why it matters
It is one of the most admired samurai manga, praised for its art and its moral complexity: almost every swordsman has a reason, and revenge is never simple. Its English edition won an Eisner Award in 2000, and Takashi Miike adapted it as a film in 2017.
The title by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 80. Reduced, that is 8. The weight sits in “Immortal”, which carries 38 on its own and reduces to 11.
The 8 governs money, authority, and the machinery of ambition. The reference files it as a reckoning. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 8 sit two smaller figures: 33 in the vowels, 11 in the consonants. Service underneath, vision on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 31, a 4, volumes is 30, a 3, years serialised is 20, a 2 and debut year is 1993, a 22. The title says 8; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The Ledger asks one thing of everything on it: follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
