Kentaro Miura's Berserk began in 1989 and ran until his death in 2021. It follows Guts, a mercenary raised in violence, through a dark medieval fantasy setting that becomes progressively more supernatural.
It is serialised as seinen and is emphatically adult work — sustained graphic violence, sexual violence, and a sustained interest in trauma and its aftermath.
Berserk is routinely cited as among the most technically accomplished manga ever drawn, and the reputation is deserved. Miura's later work in particular achieves a density of rendering — architecture, armour, crowds, landscape — that is difficult to believe was produced on a serialisation schedule.
Crucially the detail is not decorative. The rendering of scale is doing narrative work: the enormity of what Guts faces is communicated by how much page space it occupies and how completely it is drawn.
Beneath the violence, the recurring subject is causality and whether people are free. The setting is explicitly governed by fate, and the central question is whether a person can act against a structure designed to determine them. The early arc dealing with Guts's time in a mercenary band is generally considered the strongest sustained work in the series and functions as a study of ambition and betrayal.
Miura's death left the series unfinished, though work has continued under a close collaborator working from Miura's known intentions. Berserk is also the definitive example of long hiatus in manga — publication was intermittent for years, and readers waiting on it became something of a running joke in fandom, with an unhappy resolution.
