A teenager who can see ghosts inherits the powers of a soul reaper, in a series whose visual style and character design outrun its plotting. Read from the edifice, as a 22.
Created by
22A 22 by its title: master builder (22), and therefore the edifice.
Tite Kubo's Bleach ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2001 to 2016. Ichigo Kurosaki, able to see spirits, acquires the powers of a Soul Reaper and is drawn into the afterlife's bureaucracy and its internal conflicts.
Design. Kubo is among the strongest character designers of his generation. Silhouettes are distinctive, costume detail is confident, and the visual identity of the series is instantly recognisable. Its enormous cast stays visually separable, which is not trivial.
Page composition. His layouts are unusually bold — heavy blacks, large negative space, and a willingness to let a page carry very little. The two-page spreads are among the most striking in mainstream shonen, and he uses white space where his contemporaries would fill.
Cool as a design principle. The series pursues style with a directness that is easy to dismiss and difficult to execute.
Plotting and pacing are the standard complaints, and they are largely fair. Long arcs resolve into extended sequences of one-on-one fights, several plot threads are left unaddressed, and the final arc was widely felt to have been compressed.
The power system also expands without firm constraints, which limits how much tension the later fights generate.
Along with two contemporaries it defined shonen internationally in the 2000s, and its influence on character and costume design across the medium is substantial.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 22 on the nose, with no reduction to do.
Twenty-two is master builder (22) — grand vision made concrete and built to last. The reference files it as an edifice. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 22's drive to turn a huge vision into something concrete.
The vowels alone reduce to 6, the consonants to 7. Responsibility underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 9, volumes is 74, an 11, years serialised is 16, a 7 and debut year is 2001, a 3 — none of which lands on the 22 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
The 22 crushes the people who build it. The production histories on this shelf are not happy ones. What the 22 still asks is that you count the years, then count the people. The other entries that reduce to 22 are collected on The Edifice.
