8The letters of this title total 53, an 8 — the number of money, authority, and the machinery of ambition.
What it is
Tsubasa Yamaguchi's Blue Period has run in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon since 2017. Yatora Yaguchi is a high-school student who is good at everything: he gets top grades, stays out drinking with his friends and is liked by everyone. Yet he feels empty. When he sees a painting by an older student in the art room, and then tries to paint the blue light of Shibuya at dawn, he feels for the first time that he has communicated something real.
How it works
Yatora decides to apply to Tokyo University of the Arts, the most competitive art school in Japan, which accepts only a tiny fraction of applicants. The series follows his training: drawing exercises, composition, colour, critique and the brutal entrance exams. Real techniques and ways of thinking about art are explained in detail, and readers learn alongside him.
The characters
Yatora's classmates and rivals are drawn with care, especially Ryūji Ayukawa, who prefers to be called Yuka, and whose struggles with family and identity run alongside Yatora's. The series is honest about self-doubt and how hard it is to know whether you are good enough.
Why it matters
It won the Manga Taishō in 2020 and was adapted as an anime in 2021 and a live-action film in 2024. It is one of the best manga about learning an art, and has inspired many readers to pick up a brush.
The title by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 53 — 8 once reduced. The weight sits in “Period”, which carries 40 on its own and reduces to 4.
The reference files it as a reckoning. The number's contribution is money, authority, and the machinery of ambition — and with it the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 1 (initiative) against a Personality of 7 (inquiry) in the consonants — initiative underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 8; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 18, a 9 and debut year is 2017, a 1. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
Read on the 8's terms, this entry asks you to follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
