9Reduced, this title gives 9. It sits on The Closing with the rest of a completion.
CLAMP's Magic Knight Rayearth ran in Kodansha's Nakayoshi from 1993 to 1996 in two parts and was collected in six volumes. Hikaru, Umi and Fuu, three girls from different schools, are pulled from Tokyo Tower into Cephiro, a world sustained by the prayers of its Pillar, Princess Emeraude. They must become Magic Knights, awaken giant guardian spirits and rescue her.
The first part plays like a role-playing game: levels, weapons, magic, a quest to gather allies and armour. Its ending overturns that structure with a revelation about what the heroes have actually been asked to do, and the second part deals with the consequences.
It combines magical girl, mecha and fantasy adventure. The guardian spirits are giant robots, and the story was published in a magazine for young girls, an unusual mix that CLAMP carried off with characteristic flair.
It is an early and influential example of the story in which a modern Japanese protagonist is summoned to a fantasy world, decades before isekai became a publishing category, and its twist questions the genre from within.
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 99 — 9 once reduced. The weight sits in “Rayearth”, which carries 42 on its own and reduces to 6.
The reference files it as a completion. The number's contribution is endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles — and with it the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 8 (power) against a Personality of 1 (initiative) in the consonants — power underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 58, a 4, volumes is 6, years serialised is 4 and debut year is 1993, a 22. The title says 9; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
Read on the 9's terms, this entry asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
