1Title sums to 73 and reduces to 1 — The Opening, where the reference files a first move.
What it is
Momoko Sakura's Chibi Maruko-chan began in Shueisha's girls' magazine Ribon in 1986 and ran there regularly until 1996, with occasional chapters afterwards. Momoko Sakura, nicknamed Maruko, is a third-grader in the town of Shimizu, in Shizuoka Prefecture, in the 1970s. She is lazy, greedy and fond of daydreaming, and lives with her parents, her older sister and her grandparents.
How it works
Each chapter is a small episode of childhood: a school trip, a festival, a craze for a pop idol, an argument with her sister, a scheme to avoid homework. The characters are her real family and classmates, gently exaggerated. A narrator comments on Maruko's behaviour with dry, adult humour.
Nostalgia
The series is set a decade or more before it was written, and recreates the details of 1970s childhood: television shows, snacks, toys and the rhythms of family life. Readers who grew up then found their own memories in it, and younger readers found an ordinary past.
Why it matters
Its anime, broadcast from 1990, became a national hit, and its theme song was a best-seller. It remains on television, and Maruko is one of the most familiar characters in Japan. Sakura, who also wrote best-selling essays, died in 2018.
The title by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 73 — 1 once reduced. The weight sits in “Maruko-chan”, which carries 42 on its own and reduces to 6.
The reference files it as a first move. The number's contribution is beginnings, leadership, and the will to act alone — and with it the 1's appetite for a clean, decisive beginning, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 11 (vision) against a Personality of 8 (power) in the consonants — vision underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 20, a 2, years serialised is 11 and debut year is 1986, a 6. The title says 1; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
Read on the 1's terms, this entry asks you to notice what had to not exist for this to be possible. The 1 mistakes being first for being right. Several of these texts describe launches that mattered enormously for a year and then mattered to nobody. The other entries that reduce to 1 are collected on The Opening.
