8Title sums to 71 and reduces to 8 — The Ledger, where the reference files a reckoning.
What it is
Yoshito Usui's Crayon Shin-chan began in Futabasha's Weekly Manga Action in 1990 and later moved to Manga Town, running until 2010 and filling 50 volumes. Shinnosuke Nohara, known as Shin-chan, is a five-year-old in Kasukabe, a commuter town in Saitama Prefecture. He flirts with grown women, does a rude dance with his bottom, says exactly what he thinks and drives his parents, Misae and Hiroshi, to despair.
How it works
The strips and short chapters are mostly gags about family life, kindergarten and the neighbourhood. Shin-chan's mother struggles with housework and money, his father with his job and his feet, and the comedy comes from a child's misunderstandings of adult life. It was published in a magazine for adults, and many of the jokes are for them.
A family story
Under the crudeness, the Noharas are a loving, ordinary middle-class family, and the series, especially its films, often turns to warm stories about parents and children.
Why it matters
Its anime, running since 1992, made Shin-chan one of Japan's most famous characters, and its annual films are hugely popular. Usui died in an accident while hiking in 2009, and his assistants continued the series as New Crayon Shin-chan from 2010.
The title by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 71. Reduced, that is 8. The weight sits in “Shin-chan”, which carries 40 on its own and reduces to 4.
The reference files it as a reckoning. The number's contribution is money, authority, and the machinery of ambition — and with it the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Beneath the 8 sit two smaller figures: 8 in the vowels, 9 in the consonants. The presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of power.
It does not rest on the letters alone. 総画 strokes is 17, an 8, volumes is 50, a 5, years serialised is 21, a 3 and debut year is 1990, a 1 — and the 8 arrives there too, by a route that owes nothing to the alphabet. A title can be translated; 総画 strokes cannot.
Read on the 8's terms, this entry asks you to follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
