Shōtarō Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 began in Shōnen King in 1964 and continued in various magazines for decades. The arms-dealing organisation Black Ghost kidnaps nine people from different countries and turns them into cyborgs with special abilities. Led by Joe Shimamura, the ninth, they escape and fight to stop Black Ghost from selling war to the world.
It is one of the first manga team-hero stories, and its cyborgs come from the Soviet Union, the United States, France, Germany, Africa, Britain, China, Native America and Japan. Each has a distinct power, from flight and super-speed to transformation and precognition, and a distinct personality.
Ishinomori used the series to write about war, the arms trade and what it means to be human once your body has been made into a weapon. The cyborgs fight not for glory but to end the business that created them.
It established the team of distinct heroes that runs from Super Sentai to modern ensemble shonen, and it is one of the major works of a creator whose influence on manga and tokusatsu is matched by very few.
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 34 — 7 once reduced.
The 7 governs analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth. The reference files it as an open question. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved is the pressure under this entry.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 6 (responsibility) against a Personality of 1 (initiative) in the consonants — responsibility underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer holds. 総画 strokes is 16, a 7 and debut year is 1964, a 2, and 総画 strokes reduces to the same 7. Two systems, one figure.
The Inquiry asks one thing of everything on it: sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
