Shōtarō Ishinomori was born in 1938 in Miyagi Prefecture. As a teenager he sent work to Osamu Tezuka, who hired him as an assistant, and he became one of the young artists of Tokiwa-sō. He worked for most of his career under the name Ishimori, changing it to Ishinomori in 1986.
His output was vast. Cyborg 009 (1964) pioneered the manga team of heroes. Kamen Rider (1971), created alongside the television series, began a franchise still running today, and he created Himitsu Sentai Gorenger (1975), the first Super Sentai series. He also wrote Japan Inc., an introduction to economics in manga form, and a multi-volume history of Japan.
He holds a Guinness World Record for the most comics published by one author, with hundreds of titles and well over a hundred thousand pages.
He died in 1998. A museum dedicated to his work, the Ishinomori Manga Museum, stands in Ishinomaki, Miyagi. His influence on Japanese superhero fiction, on screen and on the page, is hard to overstate.
