童夢 · Dōmu
In a vast suburban housing estate, a series of deaths turns out to be the work of a senile old man with psychic powers, until a small girl stands up to him. Read from the care, as a 6.

6Six — responsibility. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.
Katsuhiro Otomo's Domu was serialised in Action Deluxe from 1980 to 1981 and published as a single volume in 1983. Police investigating a string of suicides and accidents in a huge apartment complex find nothing. The culprit is Old Cho, an elderly resident with psychic powers who kills for amusement. Then Etsuko, a young girl with powers of her own, arrives in the estate.
The confrontation between the two is fought almost entirely in silence, through stares, broken concrete and bodies thrown through the air, in sequences of astonishing control. Otomo renders the housing estate in exact architectural detail, which makes the destruction feel real.
Domu was the first manga to win the Nihon SF Taishō, Japan's major science fiction award, and it established the visual approach Otomo would take to its limit in Akira: realistic urban space, precise anatomy and psychic violence shown as physical force.
The scenes of psychic children and collapsing buildings were widely imitated in manga, anime and film. Read alongside Akira, it shows the same ideas in a tighter, more frightening form.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 69, which folds down to 6. The weight sits in “Child's”, which carries 28 on its own and reduces to 1.
Six is nurturer & harmonizer — care, community, and the weight of duty. The reference files it as an obligation. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 6's pull toward responsibility, care, and the people involved.
The vowels alone reduce to 7, the consonants to 8. Inquiry underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 25, a 7, volumes is 1, years serialised is 2 and debut year is 1980, a 9. The title says 6; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 6 smothers. The same instinct that protects a readership produces the paternalism several of these entries document. What the 6 still asks is that you name the people this was answerable to. The other entries that reduce to 6 are collected on The Care.
