大友 克洋
Born 1954
The creator of Akira and director of its film adaptation, whose architectural precision reshaped how comics render cities and destruction. The name reduces to 11 — the signal.
11An 11 by its name: visionary (master 11), and therefore the signal.
Katsuhiro Otomo worked through the 1970s before Domu and then Akira, serialised from 1982 to 1990, established him internationally. He also directed the 1988 Akira film and has worked extensively in animation since.
Architectural rigour. Otomo draws cities as places with consistent geometry rather than as backdrops. Perspective holds across panels, buildings have plausible structure, and streets connect. This is why his destruction sequences are legible: the geometry is exact before it is broken, so the reader understands what is being lost.
Mechanical precision. His linework is controlled and unshowy, closer to technical drawing than to expressive brushwork, which makes the moments of chaos land harder by contrast.
Scale of crowds. He draws large numbers of individuated people, which is laborious and produces a specific effect — the sense of a city as a mass of separate lives rather than a setting.
Otomo's visual language propagated well beyond manga into science fiction design generally, and his compositions are recognisable secondhand in work by people who have never read him. The English release of Akira in the late 1980s was also among the first sustained attempts to present manga to a Western audience, making him historically important to the medium's international reach as well as to its craft.
Power without maturity, institutional failure, and the long aftermath of catastrophe — themes given particular weight by a postwar Japanese context his work engages with directly.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 65 across 2 words, reducing to 11. The weight sits in “Katsuhiro”, which carries 41 on its own and reduces to 5.
Eleven is visionary (master 11) — inspiration, tension, and heightened awareness. The reference files it as a signal received early. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.
Heart's Desire 1, Personality 1: the subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is initiative — an unusually undivided reading.
人格 core is 11, 総格 total is 23, a 5 and born is 1954, a 1. That the 11 turns up in 人格 core as well as in the letters is the sort of coincidence this reference collects rather than explains.
The 11 is unstable and knows it. Being early and being wrong are indistinguishable until later. What the 11 still asks is that you remember that nobody noticed this at the time. The other entries that reduce to 11 are collected on The Signal.
