Yoshihiro Togashi's Hunter x Hunter began in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1998. Gon Freecss leaves home to find the father who abandoned him and qualify as a Hunter, a licensed profession covering everything from treasure recovery to hunting people.
Its reputation rests substantially on nen, the ability system. Nen is specified with unusual rigour: categories with defined strengths and weaknesses, an explicit trade-off in which narrower restrictions produce greater power, and abilities that require declared conditions.
The result is that fights are frequently won by information and constraint rather than force. Because the reader understands the rules, a clever application is genuinely satisfying, and this is the standard example cited for why constrained systems beat open ones.
The series repeatedly refuses shonen convention. Protagonists lose badly and are permanently marked by it. One extended arc is largely political and strategic with the nominal hero sidelined. Another spends enormous space on the interior life of its antagonists. Togashi is willing to let the story be about something other than his lead.
The series is as well known for its interruptions as its content. Publication has been intermittent for many years, connected to Togashi's chronic health problems, and long gaps between short bursts of chapters are the established pattern.
Anyone starting it should know that it is not on a reliable schedule and may not conclude.
