Aka Akasaka's Kaguya-sama: Love Is War began in Miracle Jump in 2015, moved to Weekly Young Jump in 2016 and ended in 2022, collected in 28 volumes. Kaguya Shinomiya, heir to a vast conglomerate, and Miyuki Shirogane, a scholarship student and the council president, are attracted to each other. Each believes that whoever confesses first loses.
Early chapters are built like strategy games. A trivial event, a shared umbrella, a film ticket, a lunch, becomes a battle of plans and counter-plans, narrated by an over-serious voice and scored with a running tally of who "won". The comedy lies in the gap between the scale of the scheming and the smallness of what is at stake.
The series slowly turns into a real romance and a story about the supporting cast's difficulties, including family pressure, loneliness and the cost of pride. By its later arcs, the game has become the thing the characters have to give up.
