What it is

Tomoko Ninomiya's Nodame Cantabile ran in Kodansha's Kiss from 2001 to 2010 and was collected in 25 volumes. Shinichi Chiaki is a gifted, arrogant music student who wants to become a conductor, but a fear of flying keeps him stuck in Japan. Megumi Noda, known as Nodame, is his neighbour: chaotic and childlike, lives in a filthy flat, and is a pianist of extraordinary instinct who cannot read a score properly.

How it works

The first half is set at a music college in Tokyo, where Chiaki forms an orchestra of misfits and Nodame struggles to take her own talent seriously. The second half moves to Paris, where both must compete in a much larger world. The comedy is broad, but the music is treated with respect: real pieces are performed, rehearsed and argued over, and the stories explain what the musicians are trying to achieve.

The relationship

Chiaki and Nodame are a comic mismatch, and their romance grows slowly. The deeper story is about each of them learning from the other: Chiaki to feel, Nodame to work.

Why it matters

It won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo, and its 2006 television drama was so successful that it drew new audiences to classical music in Japan. It is one of the best-known music manga and a model for josei series that combine comedy and professional ambition.
