8Title sums to 116 and reduces to 8 — The Ledger, where the reference files a reckoning.
What it is
Fujita's Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku began as a webcomic posted on the illustration site pixiv in 2014, and was then serialised on Ichijinsha's web magazine Comic Pool until 2021, collected in 11 volumes. Narumi Momose has changed jobs to escape the fallout when her last boyfriend found out she was an otaku. At her new office she finds her childhood friend Hirotaka Nifuji, a quiet, devoted gamer.
How it works
Narumi, a fujoshi who loves boys' love manga, and Hirotaka, who plays games every spare moment, start dating, mostly because neither has to hide anything from the other. The episodes are short comic scenes from their relationship, their hobbies and their workplace, along with another couple, their colleagues Hanako and Tarō, who are also otaku.
The comedy
The series is full of fan in-jokes: game terms, convention habits, the particular language of BL fans. But its heart is an adult relationship between two people who are comfortable with each other, and it treats the characters' passions with affection rather than mockery.
Why it matters
It is a well-known example of a manga that began on pixiv and became a major hit. Its 2018 anime and 2020 live-action film made it popular with adult fans who saw themselves in it.
The title by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 116 — 8 once reduced. The weight sits in “Wotakoi:”, which carries 31 on its own and reduces to 4.
The reference files it as a reckoning. The number's contribution is money, authority, and the machinery of ambition — and with it the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 5 (change) against a Personality of 3 (expression) in the consonants — change underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
It does not rest on the letters alone. 総画 strokes is 45, a 9, volumes is 11, years serialised is 8 and debut year is 2014, a 7 — and the 8 arrives there too, by a route that owes nothing to the alphabet. A title can be translated; years serialised cannot.
Read on the 8's terms, this entry asks you to follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
