Isekai means another world. The protagonist arrives from contemporary reality into a fantasy setting, usually retaining their memories and often gaining an explicit advantage — knowledge, a skill, or game-like statistics.
The volume is structural. Modern isekai overwhelmingly originates on free web-novel platforms where readership is measured directly, and successful entries progress to light novel, manga and anime adaptations. The premise suits that pipeline unusually well: exposition is natural because the protagonist knows nothing, the reader has a built-in proxy, game logic needs no explaining, and the barrier to writing one is very low.
Protagonists granted overwhelming power at no cost, so tension evaporates. Interchangeable pseudo-medieval settings. Supporting casts that exist to admire the lead. These are fair as descriptions of the median rather than of the whole category.
Reverse isekai brings a fantasy character into the modern world. Reincarnation stories have the protagonist reborn as an infant rather than transported intact. Villainess stories, in which a woman is reborn as the antagonist of a novel she read, form a large and largely separate tradition.
