What it means
Manhwa is the Korean word for comics, cognate with the Japanese manga and the Chinese manhua — the three words share the same written characters.
Why it reads differently
Modern manhwa is overwhelmingly digital and vertical. Webtoon platforms present a single continuous scrolling strip with no page turns, usually in full colour, designed for a phone screen held upright.
This changes the craft substantially. There is no two-page spread, no page-turn reveal, and no fixed panel grid. Instead, creators control pace with the length of empty space between panels — a scroll can be stretched to delay a reveal in a way print cannot replicate.
Reading direction
Older print manhwa reads left to right, unlike manga. Vertical-scroll manhwa has no horizontal reading order at all, which is why readers who begin with webtoons often find print manga a genuinely unfamiliar format rather than a small adjustment.
Commonly confused with
Manhwa is frequently called manga in casual English use. The distinction matters more than pedantry suggests, because the format, the publishing model and the reading experience all differ.
