What it is
Yumi Unita's Usagi Drop ran in Shodensha's Feel Young from 2005 to 2011. Daikichi, a thirty-year-old single office worker, attends his grandfather's funeral and discovers that the old man left behind a six-year-old daughter, Rin. When the relatives refuse to take her in, Daikichi impulsively decides to raise her himself.
How it works
The first half is a gentle, detailed story of learning to be a parent: finding a nursery, changing jobs to work fewer hours, coping with illnesses and school events, and meeting other single parents. Daikichi has no idea what he is doing, and the series takes his small discoveries seriously. Rin is drawn as a real child, quiet, stubborn and observant.
The time skip
The second half jumps ten years, to Rin as a teenager, and turns to her questions about her mother, her future and her feelings. Its ending divided readers, and many who love the first half recommend reading it with that in mind.
Why it matters
It is a celebrated josei manga about care and family, and one of the few to centre on a man learning to parent alone. Its 2011 anime and live-action film both adapted only the first half.
The title by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 47, which folds down to 11. The weight sits in “Drop”, which carries 26 on its own and reduces to 8.
