三浦 建太郎
Born 1966
The creator of Berserk, whose draughtsmanship is widely regarded as the technical high point of the medium. Read from the signal, as an 11.
11Eleven — vision. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.
Kentaro Miura (1966–2021) began Berserk in 1989 and worked on it for the rest of his life. He died in 2021 of an aortic dissection, leaving the series unfinished.
He was drawing seriously from childhood and his early work already showed unusual technical facility, though the density that defines his reputation developed over the following decades.
Miura's rendering is the reason he is discussed the way he is. His later pages carry a level of detail — armour, architecture, crowds, landscape, anatomy under strain — that is difficult to reconcile with any serialisation schedule.
The detail is structural rather than decorative. Scale is his central expressive tool: the enormity of what his protagonist faces is communicated by how much page area it occupies and how completely it is drawn. A less rendered version of the same image would not carry the same weight.
Beneath the violence, Miura's persistent subject was whether a person can act against a structure designed to determine them. His world is explicitly governed by fate, and the drama comes from resistance to it. His treatment of trauma and its long aftermath is unusually sustained for action-oriented work.
His death prompted an unusual public response, and Berserk has continued under a close collaborator working from Miura's known intentions. His influence on dark fantasy art, in and beyond manga, is extensive enough that his compositions are recognisable secondhand in work by people who never read him.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 56, which folds down to 11. The weight sits in “Kentaro”, which carries 30 on its own and reduces to 3.
What the 11 brings is vision. The reference files it as a signal received early. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.
The vowels alone reduce to 7, the consonants to 4. Inquiry underneath, foundation on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 11; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 19, a 1, 総格 total is 35, an 8 and born is 1966, a 22. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.
The 11 asks you to remember that nobody noticed this at the time. The 11 is unstable and knows it. Being early and being wrong are indistinguishable until later. The other entries that reduce to 11 are collected on The Signal.
