ルックバック · Rukku Bakku
Two girls who love to draw manga, one confident and one reclusive, become partners and then go separate ways, in a long one-shot about making art. The title reduces to 7 — the inquiry.

7Seven — inquiry. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.
Tatsuki Fujimoto's Look Back is a one-shot of about 140 pages published on Shōnen Jump+ in July 2021. Fujino, a fourth-grader whose comic strips in the school newspaper make her the class star, is stunned when a reclusive classmate, Kyomoto, turns in strips drawn far better than hers. Rivalry turns into admiration, and the two become partners.
Much of the story is told without words: pages of Fujino drawing at her desk through the seasons, the two walking in the rain, years passing in a single sequence. The silence makes the work of drawing, hours alone at a desk, the centre of the story.
A sudden act of violence divides the story, and its second half imagines another path the two girls' lives might have taken. Many readers connected it to the 2019 arson attack on Kyoto Animation, and it was read in Japan as a meditation on grief and on why people keep making things.
It was read millions of times within days of release and became one of the most discussed manga of its year. Its 2024 animated film was widely praised, and it is often recommended as the most direct statement of what drawing means to a creator.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 25 across 2 words, reducing to 7. The weight sits in “Look”, which carries 17 on its own and reduces to 8.
Seven is analyst & seeker — analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth. The reference files it as an open question. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved.
Heart's Desire 4, Personality 3: foundation underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
It does not rest on the letters alone. 総画 strokes is 16, a 7, volumes is 1, years serialised is 1 and debut year is 2021, a 5 — and the 7 arrives there too, by a route that owes nothing to the alphabet. A title can be translated; 総画 strokes cannot.
The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. What the 7 still asks is that you sit with the part that was never explained. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
